Accident with an Uninsured Vehicle in Cyprus – What Should You Do?

According to statistics from the Motor Insurers' Fund of Cyprus (MIF) , approximately 80,000 uninsured licensed vehicles are on the roads of Cyprus, representing 9.6% of the total number of insured vehicles. This means that approximately one in ten vehicles does not have the required insurance coverage.

🚨 Accident with an Uninsured Vehicle – What Should You Do?

  1. Notify the Police: Even if there are no injuries, you are required to report the accident to the police. The presence of the police is necessary for filing any claim for compensation. If the driver responsible for the accident leaves the scene, report the incident as a hit-and-run and ask for it to be recorded.
  2. 2. Collect evidence: Record the license plate number, make, model, and color of the uninsured vehicle. If possible, take photos of the accident scene and the vehicles involved. If there are eyewitnesses, note their details.
  3. 3. Notify your insurance company: Contact your insurance company as soon as possible. If you have comprehensive vehicle coverage, the insurance company may take over the claim and pursue the at- fault driver.
  4. 4. Submit a claim to the Motor Insurers' Fund (MIF): The MIF compensates victims of accidents involving uninsured or unknown vehicles in Cyprus. To submit a claim, you will need a copy of the accident report from the police, the vehicle registration document, your vehicle insurance certificate for the day of the accident, and medical certificates or other supporting documents, if available.

⚠️ If the driver responsible leaves the scene of the accident

If the driver responsible leaves the scene of the accident without exchanging details, follow the same procedure described above: notify the police immediately, record the vehicle details, collect statements from any eyewitnesses, contact MIF, and inform your insurance company.

If you are a Trust Insurance customer with comprehensive car insurance, please report the incident Immediately, and work with the company to file a claim.

The presence of tens of thousands of uninsured vehicles on Cypriot roads poses a significant risk to every responsible driver. Despite the fact that car insurance is mandatory by law, a significant number of vehicles are on the road without the required coverage. Although the institutional framework through MIF provides protection to victims of accidents involving uninsured vehicles, the relevant procedure is often complex and requires immediate action and full documentation.

Prevention remains the best defense: ensure that your vehicle is fully insured and know what to do in the event of an accident. Being properly informed can make the difference between organized management and a difficult, time-consuming process.
